I'm not sure there are any other lines of work where one is so regularly subjected to rather unpleasant people, yet must keep serving and smiling--whether at the dining table or the front desk. Oh, I know ... there are also a lot of very nice people who appreciate your skill and hard work; but more often than not, you find you are satisfied with a pleasant "thank you." and perhaps a decent tip.

In short, these are "people" professions, and the better you understand people (and yourself),  the more rewarding your life and work will be.
